Toyota Safety Sense
Safety out on the roads is the primary concern for many drivers when they’re looking at a new vehicle. Modern tech has provided cars, trucks, and SUVs with better safety systems than ever before. From crash avoidance, to providing information and input to the driver, to semi-autonomous systems, the ability to avoid or survive incidents is better than ever before. With the Toyota Safety Sense system, every Toyota is one of the best-equipped vehicles on the road to provide great safety for drivers, passengers, other drivers, and even pedestrians!
What is Toyota Safety Sense?
Bringing together the latest in safety systems in a single package, Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is a suite of active safety technologies and advanced driver assistance systems. This includes older technology that continues to grow like Lane Departure Alert and Radar Cruise Control, as well as newer systems like Lane Tracing Assist and Road Sign Assist. On top of these, the full roster of systems includes:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Proactive Driving Assist
- Automatic High Beams
There are plenty of other safety features available on Toyota vehicles, including surround-view cameras, but those aren’t part of the Safety Sense system.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 - The Latest Evolution
One of the best things about Toyota Safety Sense is its continued evolution! For instance, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is the latest version of the suite and features an upgraded forward-facing camera with higher resolution and wider angles. It also has an improved radar sensor with a longer, wider field of view. This allows the Toyota Safety System features to be enhanced for better performance.
- The Pre-Collision System, designed to help drivers mitigate or avoid frontal collisions, gets an improved detection range and can detect vehicles approaching from a lateral direction.
- Lane Departure Alert gets enhanced lane recognition and can detect three-dimensional objects that can define the lane.
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control gets a fourth cruise distance setting.
- Lane Tracing System can steer the vehicle within the lane to offset the vehicle’s driving path.
- Road Sign Assist can detect and interpret a wider variety of road signs including pedestrian crossing signs.
The biggest evolution is Proactive Driving Assist, which is brand new on the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system. This system provides gentle braking and steering to help support driving tasks that it detects. This includes Obstacle Anticipation Assist, Deceleration Assist, and Steering Assist that all comes together to help avoid obstacles, pedestrians, bicyclists and more!
What’s Next For Toyota Safety Sense
Toyota continues to develop the next generation of Toyota Safety Sense. At the Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC), Toyota has worked with universities, hospitals, and researchers to continually develop and improve safety systems in Toyota vehicles. This research center will help drive the next generation of the Toyota Safety Sense system, which will continue to improve autonomous systems that will keep drivers, passengers, and pedestrians safe! On top of that, CSRC Next is a more-recent initiative that looks to better integrate drivers with the evolving safety features and smart infrastructures.
So check out the Toyota Safety System 3.0, available on brand-new Toyota vehicles. Certified Pre-Owned Toyota vehicles will also have previous versions equipped, such as the TSS 2.0 or TSS 2.5. While not as modern, these systems are exceptional systems that will still provide great safety and peace of mind for all involved!
